Sapphires are Blue as the Sea
Coming out of the forest, they found themselves on a beach. There were miles of coast line to be seen. Rage stared out at the waters. There was something out there for them. He didn't know if it was an egg. He just felt he had to go out there.
"What are we doing here?" Dreik asked looking out on the water. He saw nothing but open waters.
"We have to go out there." Rage said.
"I can't swim." Dreik told him nervously. Rage looked at him and laughed.
"What's so funny?" Dreik asked. "I can't.!!!"
"Gaia can." Rage patted him on the back. "But don't worry. We'll fly out. I'll take Jandar, Blaze will take you, and Jayce can carry Ono."
"Carry Ono where?" Jayce asked.
"You can carry his weight a long distance?" Rage asked.
"My skinny little brother?" Jayce said cradling the egg. "Yeah, for hours. Why?"
"We're going out there." Dreik said pointing.
"Where?" Asked Blaze stepping out of the forest. "There's nothing out there but water."
Jandar stepped up beside Rage. He knew something was bothering Rage.
"What is it?" He asked.
"I don't know." Rage frowned. "But something's out there. And we have to go see what it is. I can feel it tugging me."
"Could it by Polan?" Jandar asked walking down to the beach with Rage following.
"No. I know the feel of the black one now." Rage picked up a rock and tossed it out into the water. He picked up another and held it in his hand. He closed his fist and heat began to rise from his hand.
"Your pretty angry." Jandar turned him to face him. Sparks flew from Rage's eyes.
"I want those eggs home safe." He said. "It makes me so angry; my own egg is out there. My child, Jandar. I want him here with me, with us."
He threw the hot stone out into the water and watched it sizzle as it sank. Jandar pulled Rage to him, his body very warm. He hugged him close.
"We're going to find it." He told his dragon mate. "This might be it out there."
"No, that I'd know. We better get moving." Rage said. He kissed Jandar. "You ready?"
"Always." Jandar smiled.
"Blaze, Jayce, follow me." Rage took his dragon form and Jandar climbed on his back. He made himself comfortable and Rage leaped into the air, his great wings spread and took them higher. Blaze followed with Dreik, then Jayce carrying Ono and the egg. Climbing higher and higher Jandar scanned the sea for anything that might catch his attention. It was a beautiful day and the air was warm and clear. Rage was being guided by his senses. It was almost like a sound calling to him. What was it? On they flew for a few hours. There were ships on the sea Jayce noticed. And there was something odd about the egg. It was warming up. He tried to shift his hold on it when it jumped out of his arms.
"Rage!!!" He yelled. "The egg!!"
If he wasn't carrying Ono, Jayce could have dived down and caught it in midair. But he couldn't do that now. He watched it fall toward a ship and crash down into the hold.
'AFTER IT!' Rage sent to them all.
Spiraling down Jayce was the only one that could land. Imagine what would happen if two dragons landed on a ship at sea. They would be attacked. Rage and Blaze would have to defend themselves and a lot of sailors would die. So Rage and Blaze circled and watched from above. Sailors came out to meet them. It's not every day an angel descends and lands on your ship. Wide eyed, the sailors gathered around. Pushing his way through the crowd sword in hand, the captain came forward.
"What goes on here?" He asked. He looked at Jayce standing there with his wings folded on his back. The captain bowed down on his knees, the crowd followed. Jayce looked at Ono.
"You seem to have that effect on people." Ono whispered joking. "Got to be the wings."
'Comes in handy sometimes.' He said. "Rise everyone. I am here for something that dropped from the sky a moment ago. It's a blue stone. Has anyone seen it?
"We saw nothing fall here." The captain was afraid to look Jayce in the eyes. Superstition. They thought it would mean their deaths to look an angel in the eye. Sometimes Jayce counted on this, now it was just annoying. They were going to have to search the ship for the egg. It had to be here somewhere.
Sarah Amerson was the only woman aboard the Sea Driver. She lived a hard life among these sailors. But fighting off and defeating every man that had made advances had finally earned her some respect. No more rape attempts at night. No more fighting every night for a private place to sleep. Only twenty six years old she had taken to sea rather than be married to the farmer her father had picked for her. That was not to be her life. Up at five in the morning for chores, cooking and cleaning. Rolling over for a man she could never even like. There had to be more to life than that. Growing up in a seaport town, she watched ships and wondered what it would be like to be on a ship going to lands far away from this damn place. Being a girl, she thought there was no chance she would ever be so lucky. She heard stories about life at sea. How hard it was. She read books and talked to sailors to learn the stars for navigation. Then from a sailor friend she learned the rules of all ships and seamanship. All the while hiding from her father. Then he announced her marriage had been arranged. She could wait no longer, she had to go that night. Sarah took some clothes and a knife and ran off. On the docks she found a ship that would take her. She was sure the captain thought she would end up as a plaything for the men being passed around then dumped at sea. But Sarah had other plans. She worked just as hard as any man there and fought harder. Soon she had become a real part of the crew. And no one could hurt her again. Down below Sarah had been busy working on a damaged sail that had been torn during a bad storm when she heard a thud somewhere behind her. She looked up at the open hold hatch. Someone must have dropped something heavy down there. Sarah got up and looked around. Behind some cargo she saw something blue. She climbed over a stack of crates and reached down and pulled it out. It was the biggest sapphire she had ever seen. No one on the crew had dropped this that she was sure of. Then where did it come from? Who did it belong to?
'I BELONG WITH YOU, SARAH' She dropped it in fright. It talked to her? What is this thing?
'I AM YOUR FUTURE' It said.
"What are you?" She asked. At that moment someone burst into the hold. Two men, one wild looking, the other with wings. Sarah stood there holding the egg.
"Who are you?" She asked.
"We've come for that." Jayce said. "My name is Jayce, this is my brother Ono."
"I'm Sarah." She smiled at them.
'I KNOW WHO YOU ARE SARAH, I HAVE WAITED FOR YOU.'
"Here take it!" Sarah held it out for them. Jayce walked over and reached for it
"That thing talks." She said. Jayce stopped.
"It talked to you?" Ono asked.
"Yes, How's that possible?" Sarah pushed it at them." If it's yours take it."
'I BELONG TO YOU, SARAH'
"Did you hear that?" She asked
"No" Jayce answered her. "Only you can hear it. Come with us and we'll show you."
"It says it belongs it me." Sarah followed Jayce and Ono out of the hold and up to the deck. All of the sailors were still where they had left them. On their knees with their heads bowed to the deck. Out in the sunlight they walked on, talking until they reached the rail.
"Sarah, that's a very special gift you're holding." Jayce said. "One meant only for you. I've cared for it until I reached you. Now it's up to you to accept it or not."
"But what is it?" She asked.
"It's a part of you." Ono said. "Do you feel anything from it?"
"It's singing to me." She said, "A song about knights and castles."
Jayce and Ono looked at each other and smiled.
"I guess my singing did make a difference." Jayce said. "Anything else?"
"It says it's going to take care of me. We'll have a very long life together as one. I feel love and like I've waited all my life for this." She looked at the egg with tears in her eyes. Yes, Whatever it was, this is what she wanted.
'THEN WE WILL BE ONE.' With that the egg pulled her overboard as it started to hatch.
"SARAH!!!!!" Ono started to dive in to save her when Jayce stopped him
"Look." He pointed up at Rage. "He says not to interfere. And not to worry, the dragon will not let her drown."
"Come on." Jayce grabbed Ono and spread his wings and took off into the air.
As Sarah fell into the water the dragon came out of its shell and moved into her and began the change.
'DON'T BE AFRAID WE'RE GOING TO BE TOGETHER.'
She felt a calm come over her as she began to grow and rip out of her clothes. Her body grew longer and gills formed in her neck, she could breathe again. Her arms and legs formed flippers. A dorsal fin grew on her back. Then her neck began to stretch and a tail grew from her bottom. At the end if her tail was a razor sharp tip. Her body grew to twenty five feet in length with deep sea blue scales. Lastly, her face changed to that of a beautiful sea dragon and short tendrils sprouted along her spine.
'WE ARE ONE, NOW.'
With the joy of her joining in her heart, Nautica swam for the surface and jumped forty feet into the air and roared a siren scream.
'WELCOME NAUTICA' Rage and the others called to her as she dove back into the water. 'THANK YOU MY KING AND BROTHERS. IT IS GOOD TO BE HERE. I WILL FOLLOW YOU.'
"Now we've found three." Jandar smiled and patted Rage's side. "Where to next?"
Sitting in his study Polan brooded over his near defeat at the hands of Rage. He must have more power. More eggs, that's the answer. If he can absorb other dragons he can become more powerful than Rage. But where to find the other dragons? The cave!! He would go back and get more eggs while Rage is away. But he also needed to keep an eye on Rage. That spirit is the answer to that one. And the Dragon Spirit, he needed to crack its secrets.
"Come to me!!" He called out. Up out of the floor, Mags rose to find Polan sitting on a chair in his study. Careful not to get too close, Mags backed up a bit. He'd rather not feel Polan's necromantic touch again. It was like hot irons on naked skin. He looked at the man in black, his master, for now. But soon he just might get his freedom on his own.
"I have a job for you." He said folding his arms in front of him. "You are to follow Rage and report back if he locates any more eggs. Do you understand?"
"I understand you." He said. "I report back if he finds any eggs."
"Yes." Polan said. "Do not disappoint me."
"I won't, master." He said hurrying away. Mags took off through the ceiling. He was glad to get away from the awful place. Even as a spirit Mags could feel the oppressed mood of this dead place. Having located Rage before, it was easier now, his energy stood out like a beacon to him. Mags oriented on Rage and closed his eyes. As a spirit, he felt a second of displacement, then opened his eyes and found himself drifting over Rage and his party. Slowly Mags drifted down to the dragons and their friends. He looked at Rage and memories began to flow into his mind. Mags remembered how a rival sorcerer had taken his son and held him for ransom. He wanted Mags to help him take over the lands of the king whose land Mag lived in. Mags had sworn to protect and never betray his king. Knights and soldiers couldn't help him save his son. The minute they attacked the boy would be killed and that was not acceptable to him. But there was another way, someone else he might get to help him. Over two hundred years ago Mags had freed a young dragon from captivity and torture by defeating a slaver. The dragon thanked him and swore he would repay Mags one day. Now was the time. Mags called to that dragon and he came to his assistance. Alone, the dragon freed his son, and Mags defeated the sorcerer. But there was something else. Mags son. The dragon saw something in the boy that impressed him. With Mags' permission the dragon took the boy to his cave where he merged with a red dragon. Rage was his son. This was the same dragon that his son had become. Mags drifted down and looked into Rage's eyes. Yes, this is his son Kevan Selmar. He could see Kevan's mother in his eyes. At that moment he knew he would never be able to turn his son over to that necromancer. He had to make contact with him.
KEVAN Mags called.
"Stop!!" Rage held out his hand. "There's something here. I think it's trying to contact me."
"What is it?" Jandar asked. "That shadow dragon?"
"No." He said. "Some kind of spirit, I think." Jandar held his staff high and spoke a spell of revelation. His staff began to give off a soft white light and Mags drifted into view in front of Rage. He smiled at his son glad to see he was now king of the dragons.
'KEVAN DO YOU REMEMBER ME?' Mags asked him.
"Who is that?" Sarah asked. Rage looked very hard at Mags then his eyes flew open in recognition. How could he forget his own father?
"It's my father." He told his friends. "Father it's been so long. How is this possible? I buried you in honors with the King. How are you here?"
'YOU LOOK SO HANDSOME, RAGE, IT IS NOW RIGHT?'
"Yes." he said. "These are members of my clan. Blaze, Gaia, and Nautica. This is Jandar Tyr, and his brothers Ono and Jayce."
'GREETINGS TO YOU ALL. NOW I HAVE TO TELL YOU OF AN EVIL MAN'
On a hill on the outskirts of Napia, Polan stood in front of a stone dais. With him was the Dragon Spirit. Now was the time to try and siphon off as much power as he could. The quarter moon was high, Polan didn't feel that he was at his maximum strength but it would have to do. The necromantic dragon placed the spirit on the dais and raised his hands high.
"LORDS OF DARKNESS, BEINGS OF HATE
I CALL UPON YOU TO UNSEAL MY FATE
THE POWER I SEEK LAYS HERE IN THIS STONE
GRANT ME THE POWER TO MAKE IT MY OWN."
Thunder roared as lightning struck the Dragon Spirit, it began to glow and pour off a mystic light. A loud rumble came from the spirit as its power was being torn from it. Roars and screams echoed from the spirit as it lost part of its being. . With a loud flash it became quiet. Polan held up a claw that pulsed with dark power.
"HA! HA1 HA! HA! HA!" His laughter drifted on the wind.
"That's more like it." He said. Polan shifted to dragon form and roared.
Spreading his wings he took off into the night. With all the power he took from the Dragon Spirit, this was the night to get all the eggs he wanted from the cave. He could start his own clan. With hundreds of dragons to follow his every wish. He would be invincible. His wings better with ease as he flew towards the cave. Polan thought nothing could beat him now. The Durmista Mountains were in sight, all he had to do was find the cave. That should be easy, all he had to do was look for the energy trail made by dragons. He shifted his vision to detect the trails. He saw nothing. Rage's trail should be showing, it wasn't that long ago that he had left. Shadoe searched every shadow and cave he found and nothing. His anger grew as he searched. Maybe he could pick up the scent of dragons. Shadoe took a few sniffs of the wind and picked something up. There it is. Taking back off he followed it around the side of the mountain and to the next peak. Getting closer, the scent was becoming stronger. Shadow landed on a ledge and faced a wall. It ended here. But there was nothing, no entrance. He looked down and saw some gold nuggets on the ground. This wall was not real,it was an illusion. Shifting back to Polan he reached out to touch the wall. Horrible pain lanced through his arm and into his chest. Polan screamed out and fell to the ground clutching his chest. By the gods of darkness, he'd never felt anything so painful. Polan got up and walked to the wall. It throbbed with power. Polan tried several spells to bring it down, But none worked. He needed Rage to bring down that spell.
'THAT'S RIGHT. YOU WILL NEVER GET THROUGH THE SPELL.'
"Who's talking?" Polan said, "I demand to know!!"
'NO ONE HERE CARES ABOUT YOUR DEMANDS. YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE.'
"We'll see." Polan said in Anger. He cast spell after spell, trying to weaken the spell, but to no effect.
'GO BACK TO YOUR DEAD CITY, YOU MURDERER. OR I'LL CAST THAT SPELL TO SURROUND YOU AND TRAP YOU HERE FOREVER.'
Shifting back to Shadoe, He took off into the sky. He hovered for a few minutes.
'I'LL BE BACK, AND WHEN I DO, I'LL DESTROY YOU AND EVERYTHING HERE.'
Off he flew into the night.
'YOU'LL SEE. I'LL BE BACK.' Gird stuck his head out of the cave and watched Shadoe fly off. Thank the gods he didn't try coming in, in dragon form it might have worked. He might have gotten in. Gird wandered back into the cave. From the entrance he had seen Polan out there. He looked different now, more powerful. It was the egg. Somehow he had merged with it and now was a dragon, too. A full dragon with all the abilities that go with whichever dragon he merged with. Gird knew he had to warn Rage that Polan had been here and that he would be back. What would he do? Even with all the power Rage had given him. Gird knew he couldn't defeat him. But he sure wanted to try.
After listening to Mags' story Rage and his friends built a camp for the night. Nautica dove into the lake to fish, and Gaia and Ono went into the forest to hunt. Jayce and Blaze took to the air flying out over the forest to scout the area.
"After that long flight, I need some exercise." Jandar said.
"I'll come with you." Rage said. He started to get up and Jandar stopped him.
"No." He said. "You just flew across that sea carrying me. You rest and talk to your father. What's it been over four hundred years since you talked? I'll be right back."
He kissed Rage then shifted to wolf form and took off into the forest. Jandar loved running free. Over logs and bushes, around trees. This was a great way to clear his mind and relieve tension. He stopped for a second and saw a rabbit. Dinner. Quietly creeping up, he dashed for it and was on the rabbit before it knew what was happening. Jandar lay down and started to eat the rabbit when he heard something.
Jandar's black ears when up ,He didn't know what direction the call was coming from. Jandar stood, no longer interested in food.
'Who are you? Where are you?'
'I NEED YOUR HELP. WILL YOU COME?'
'If you lead me to you, I'll come.'
'I'LL SHOW YOUR IN YOUR MIND WHERE TO GO. HURRY PLEASE, I DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME.'
In his mind Jandar knew exactly where to go. His legs pumped as he run towards whatever it was that was calling him. He had a feeling he knew what it was. Running down an incline Jandar found himself outside of a cave.
'I AM IN HERE.'
He heard that. Shifting back to human, Jandar summoned a light orb to light his way and went in. This cave seemed really old, bones littered the ground. All kinds of animal bones at first. Then larger bones. Ribs and spines, legs and wings, then whole skeletons. This was a dragon lair. An old one, it seemed everything here was dead.
'NOT EVERYTHING, NOT YET.' Jandar heard. 'I AM STILL ALIVE.'
'Where are you?' Jandar cast the light orb to go higher as he walked further back.
Lying in a great pile of gold, Jandar saw the oldest bronze dragon he had ever seen. He was way over sixty feet long and by his looks, more than four or five thousand years old.
'NOT QUITE THAT OLD, MY NAME IS CANNIN'
Jandar walked over to the dragon's head and stood before its huge glowing eye. How beautiful he must have been in his youth. He was totally bronze colored from head to the tip of his tail. He had a great maw, large enough to fit three cows. On his head he had two ram like horns that spiraled out. His massive wings were folded against his back.
'Why have you called me here?' Jandar asked.
'I AM THE LAST ADULT OF MY CLAN. WE WERE DEVASTATED BY A PLAGUE SET ON US OVER ONE THOUSAND YEARS AGO. ONE OF MY BROTHERS WAS TRAPPED BY A WIZARD AND PLACED IN HIS DUNGEON SURROUNDED BY WASTE. HE HAD TO BURN IT OR DROWN IN THE FILTH.. HE FLAMED THE FILTH UNTIL THE SPELLS ON THE WALLS THAT TRAPPED HIM CORRODED AND HE WAS ABLE TO BREAK FREE.'
"I'm sorry." Jandar said to him. "What a horrible way to be enslaved."
'HE DESTROYED THE CASTLE AND THE WIZARD AND CAME HOME. BUT UNKNOWN TO HIM THE DAMAGE WAS DONE. SLOWLY MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS STARTED TO GET SICK. SOON THEY STARTED TO DIE. AND WE COULDN'T LAY EGGS ANYMORE. THAT WAS THE DOOM OF OUR CLAN.'
Jandar ran his hand along Cannin's eye ridge. "How can I help you?"
'YOU CAN TAKE OUR LAST EGG.' Cannin pushed a large golden egg out to Jandar. 'PLEASE TAKE CARE OF HIM.'
"Why don't I try and heal you?" Jandar said.
'IT'S TOO LATE FOR THAT, MY TIME IS DONE. SAVE MY LAST CHILD. PLEASE........' The glow in Cannin's eye faded out and he let his last breath go. Cannin the mighty bronze dragon was dead.
"I will do as you ask. That's my promise." Jandar picked up the golden egg and walked out of the cave. Jandar raised his hand and summoned his staff. Pointing at the cave entrance, a bolt of energy shot out and collapsed the cave." Good bye Cannin."
Back at the campsite Rage was getting worried that Jandar still hadn't gotten back yet. He paced back and forth looking into the forest.
"I'm going after him, something's wrong." Rage said.
"No." Ono pointed. "Here he comes."
Jandar walked into the campsite carrying a large object.
"Is that what I think it is?" Rage asked. He walked over to Jandar looking at the gold egg in his hands.
"Where did you get it? Don't tell me from a nest?"
"Relax." Jandar said. "It was given to me by the last of a dying clan. I promised to care for it. So what do I do?"
"You keep it warm until it hatches." Rage took the egg from Jandar and placed his hand on it. "It's calling out to someone."
He closed his eyes and concentrated. "There's someone here it wants."
All the rest of them gathered around Rage to find out what was happening with the egg. Who could it be calling? There was no one else here.
"Father?" He called. Everyone looked up as Mags answered and moved closer.
"It wants you." Rage looked as his father drifted over to him." Can you hear it?"
'What?' Mags spirit kept moving closer. No matter how he tried he couldn't stop. He was being sucked into the egg.
Into the egg he went. In their heads they heard him.
"Father!!!!!" Rage called.
"What's happening?" Jandar grabbed the egg.
"It took my Father." He said. "I think it's going to hatch."
Suddenly the egg began to rock and crack, Pieces fell off as it moved in his hand. A golden head peeked out as the egg fell to pieces. A small dragon jumped out and hopped on Rages shoulder. It coiled its twin tails around his neck.
'WE'RE SHINE NOW. MAGS IS NO MORE. IT FEELS GOOD, SON.'
Shine flexed his wing and roared. His eyes flashed with electrical sparks as he reared up. Shine flexed his wings and took to the air, doing acrobatics around the camp. Mags was now alive again.
'I'M ALIVE AGAIN!!! AND FREE OF POLAN'S SPELL!!!'
Everyone watched him as he flew up into the trees. In the twilight they could see his glowing body. Higher and higher he flew. Now lightning shot out with his roars and lit the sky. As he rose, his body grew bigger until he reached his full size. Shine had become a beautiful dragon with shining golden scales and wings. He had a long pair of pointed twin tails and ridges down his back. Claws and a maw full of sharp teeth. Two small shell like ears and small horns that protruded from his forehead.
"What form will he take when he lands?" Blaze asked.
"None." Rage told them. "Father didn't have a physical body, he was a spirit when he merged, so Shine won't have a human form. But he will be able to be the small dragon he was when he hatched when he wants to, and his ghost form or grow large. You all see he's an energy dragon. He'll have power over lightning and a few other types of energy. That makes four eggs. One unexpected."
